How to Recover from Identity Theft

Identity theft is when a person steals someone’s personal information. They then pose as that person and commit fraud or other crimes. Identity thieves often go after your name, Social Security number, account number, or date of birth.

IdentityTheft.gov can help you report and recover from identity theft. You will explain what happened. Then, you’ll get a personal recovery plan. If you create an account, you’ll get help with each step and tracking your progress. IdentityTheft.gov will even help you create the forms you’ll need.
